Yeast Extract May Boost Brain Function

Marmite, which is a spread made from yeast extract, is pungent and not commonly liked outside the United Kingdom, however a recent study, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, found that it may have properties which could be helpful in treating certain neurological conditions, such as anxiety, depression, autism and even epilepsy. This may make the substance far more popular, although only for medicinal purposes. Dr. Daniel Baker, the study’s senior author, opines that Marmite’s high B-12 level may account for its ability to stimulate the production of GABA, which in turn results in a calming of the brain’s response to visual stimuli.
