Helping Seniors with Toileting Issues

– Posted in: Features

For several years before they became very sick, my parents who both also suffered from arthritis needed some help getting off the toilet.

We bought them a raised toilet seat which worked very well.  It was easily removable when family or friends came to visit, but offered that extra five inches of boost for them when using the bathroom. They used the raised toilet seat for many years until my father’s condition worsened almost overnight.  He never had the need to use a commode, but had to use adult diapers in bed.  Adult diapers are a real help for the caregiver because they prevent accidents and save clean up time.  It can be a real struggle for the caregiver who has to constantly change and launder sheets and blankets after an accident, not to mention wash and change the clothes of the sick person.  Adult disposable diapers have been improved over the years.  They are now designed to fit comfortably and absorb more.  The Wellness briefs, for example, are very absorbent which allows for fewer changes during the day.  This new absorbent design really saves on money and time involved in changing the diaper.

Before my mother needed adult diapers, she used a portable commode.  When choosing a commode, take into account the size of the person.  Make sure that it can support the weight of the person and is wide enough between the arms, so that the person can easily sit.  Most commodes have adjustable legs so the height of the seat can be raised or lowered to accommodate the person.  Because commodes tend to take up a lot of space in a room, companies are beginning to make them able to be folded. Folding commodes really help since they take up less space and can be stored out of the way between uses. Commodes now have commode liners available to make clean up so much easier.

My grandmother was having some problems getting off of the toilet. Her toilet was very low and she did not have the strength to pull herself up. She became very embarrassed when my grandfather was not home and she would have to ask me or my other cousins to help her get off the toilet. I purchased a raised toilet seat for her and she loved it. She used it everyday and it helped her immensely. She was relieved that she no longer needed to ask for assistance. In fact, she was so happy with the seat that she purchased it for her sister, who was also struggling with the same issue.
